The two categories of epidemiologists are research and clinical. Research epidemiologists study diseases to find ways to cure or prevent them, researching diseases that affect the whole human body, like HIV, or focusing their research on illnesses that target one region of the body, such as the lungs or heart. Research epidemiologists typically work at research facilities, such as universities, or for the federal government. Clinical epidemiologists usually work in hospitals or outpatient centers, where they collaborate with doctors to stop or prevent the outbreak of diseases.

Clinical Epidemiologist Jobs Vacant
The Clinical Epidemiologist is expected to engage in interdisciplinary, translational science. This individual will have the opportunity to develop his/her own line of investigation along with obtaining independent funding. There will also be collaborative potential and networking with Epidemiologists and clinical researchers. The Epidemiologist will serve as part of the Clinical Organization team and is responsible for assisting in the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of investigator-initiated clinical and translational research, including epidemiologic studies and clinical trials. He/she will also serve as a resource for study design, analysis plans, and research methodology.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in a public health or related field (PhD, DrPH, MD or equivalent). Training and a minimum of one year of experience in the design, analysis and interpretation of investigator-initiated epidemiologic studies including intervention studies. Specific training and skills in multilevel and/or longitudinal biostatistical analyses. Prefer specific experience in pediatrics and training in clinical epidemiology. Skilled in utilizing statistical software such as SAS, SPSS or STAT and SQL in order to organize data and perform a wide variety of complex statistical analyses. Strong analytical and problem solving abilities required. Ability to work independently with limited supervision in area of expertise, but seeking appropriate consultation and strategic oversight from organizational leadership

Research Epidemiologist Jobs Vacant
To conduct disease surveillance and recommend disease control measures; to evaluate chronic and communicable disease data including unusual occurrences of illness; to function as a member of a multidisciplinary outbreak investigation and response team, conducting field investigations, and epidemiologic studies; to provide epidemiologic information to the medical community and general public
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

Conduct epidemiologic surveillance activities including community assessments
Design data collection forms and enter data into computer
Interview cases, contacts, and suspected disease carriers
Conduct epidemiologic analyses of disease data from various sources using computer software
Assist in the investigation and control of disease outbreaks
Participate in field investigations at hospitals, physician offices, laboratories, clinics, food establishments, childcare facilities or other locations as necessary to complete epidemiologic investigations
Prepare reports on investigative activities and findings using computer software
Evaluate and investigate unusual disease reports from laboratories, physicians and others
Provide information and answer questions from health district staff, health care providers, the media and the general public regarding disease symptoms, and disease prevention and control
Make presentations to the medical community and general public
Special projects as requested by managerial or administrative staff
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

 

Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Basic principles of biology and microbiology
Epidemiologic principles
Communicable disease etiology and intervention methods
Risk factors associated with communicable, vector-borne and chronic diseases
Chronic disease prevention methods
Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
Principles and procedures of record keeping
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation

Ability to:

Use a computer proficiently
Work effectively with a multidisciplinary team
Calculate basic statistical measures such as rates, averages, medians, standard deviation, confidence intervals and to plot data on graphs
Design and conduct case-control and cohort studies and community assessments
Interview cases in order to determine demographic, medically relevant information and risk factor data
Interpret and analyze the significance of medical, health and other data obtained from a variety of sources
Maintain confidentiality
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Establish and maintain congenial relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Maintain a professional demeanor in all circumstances
Learn pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations pertaining to disease surveillance and control

Training and Experience Guidelines

Training:

Equivalent to a master's degree in epidemiology or a master's degree in Public Health with major course work in epidemiology from an accredited college or university. (Equivalent means that master’s degree course work is completed, and/or a year long certificated and master degree equivalent program has been completed.)

Experience:
One year of experience, post degree, working in epidemiologic research or public health disease investigation
Experience in chronic disease surveillance and/or program evaluation preferred
Experience in SAS preferred
